If COVID taught us anything, it’s to value our loved ones and cherish the time we have together. Lockdown forced us to become more creative with the way we spend quality time together, and as a result, new traditions were born. One way to have good quality family time is to have a family games night with board games!
Having a family night in is a great way for everyone in the family to come together and share their experiences and thoughts, discuss what’s currently going on in their lives, and create fond memories. These days there are so many exciting board games available to purchase that there’s always bound to be something for everyone, no matter their age or interests.

Beat The Parents
The battle is ON! Beat The Parents is a hilarious trivia based game that pits the children against the parents. Before gameplay starts, a wager is written down on the special board, such as doing the washing up for the week or taking the bins out. This wager makes the whole gameplay that little bit more interesting…and competitive! Parents and children then have to answer different trivia questions; these are in two different categories in order to accommodate for the age difference. Beat The Parents is great for a family night in, parties, date nights and so much more.
Labyrinth
This hugely popular board game is best played with 2 – 4 players aged 7+. The aim of the game is to find the shortest route through the labyrinth and collect your treasures along the way. This board game is a great choice for those family nights in thanks to the longevity of the gameplay – each time you set up the board, it’s completely different. There are several theme variations of this popular board game, including a Pokemon themed board, Harry Potter and Mario.
Monopoly
When I think of family game nights, the first board game I think of is Monopoly. Before we talk about Monopoly anymore, please be warned that this is a seriously competitive game! The aim of the game is to make your way around the board, buying properties and building houses and hotels in order to charge other players rent. If another player lands on a property you own, they owe you money – if they can’t pay and they can’t mortgage any of their properties, they’re out! Choose your favourite player token, sell, buy, and trade with your fellow players, and don’t forget to set aside a few hours to secure your property empire.
A Game Of Cat And Mouse
A fast-paced Pinball style game that uses the players’ quick reflexes and precision aiming (as well as a few magnets) to make a fiercely protective board game the whole family will love. I suppose it’s sort of like the Hungry Hungry Hippo of this generation. A Game Of Cat And Mouse is portable and easy to set up – you just open up the box and it’s ready to play!
Scrabble/Junior Scrabble
Another classic family board game is Scrabble – or Junior Scrabble if you’ve got children who are interested in playing word games and expanding their vocabulary. With a good educational element, including mathematics when adding up scores, practising spellings and vocabulary knowledge, Scrabble has been a firm family favourite for generations.
Mousetrap
Mousetrap was one of my favourite board games to play as a child and, even to this day, I still love it. In order to play Mousetrap on your next family games night, you need to set aside some time to construct the board. The complex mouse catching contraption is fun to construct as a family and teaches children all about cause and effect. With non-stop moving contraptions, Mousetrap is a really exciting and gripping addition to your family game night board games.
